Assessment of the Progress Made after the 2021 Publication of the Future of Nursing 2020-2030

Commissioned by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NAM) produced a report with recommendations on how to reclaim nurses’ leading roles in addressing health equity. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity outlines a vision for strengthening the nursing profession over the next decade, focusing on five key areas: the nursing workforce, leadership, nursing education, nurse well-being, and emergency preparedness and response. It focuses on the importance of removing structural barriers that have perpetuated health inequities, particularly for historically marginalized populations, but also for nurses themselves. The report outlines actions for federal agencies, lawmakers, and stakeholders.

Using a mixed methods approach, this project will evaluate the report’s progress, as well as facilitators and barriers toward implementing the NAM recommendations, and in so doing, identify areas in which more work is needed.
