The Prescription Contraception Workforce Tracker monitors the location, clinician specialty, and distribution/clinician density of the prescription contraception workforce. The tracker uses IQVIA prescription claims to identify prescribers with at least 10 new prescriptions of the contraceptive pill, patch, and/or ring. The claims cover an estimated 92 – 94% of all retail prescription claims nationally in 2019 – 2023.
- Examine state and county variation in the prescription contraception workforce. Out of the 3,143 counties in the US, 197 (6%) had no contraception prescribers in 2023, and 487 (15%) had fewer than 10 prescribers per 10,000 population of females* of reproductive age.
- Track the workforce over time. The last several years have seen significant changes in the health care environment, including COVID-19 and the overturning of Roe v Wade. The total number of contraception prescribers increased from 215,767 to 217,103 between 2019 and 2023.
- Compare prescribing across specialties. In 2023, this workforce included 59,609 nurse practitioners,49,446 family medicine physicians, and 31,045 OBGYNs.

*We recognize that females are not the only people who need contraception services and seek to be inclusive of all genders. However, we use the American Community Survey for this analysis, which is the most comprehensive national dataset available but uses a binary gender indicator.
